5. Company Van drivers - Can Mileage Log provide help with the Tax benefit changes on 6th April 2007?
Yes, From April 6, the scale charge for unrestricted private van use will rise from £500 to £3,000, with an additional £500 charge for employer-provided fuel used privately. Under these rules, basic rate taxpayers who choose to have unlimited private van use will pay 22% of £3,000, equal to £660 benefit-in-kind tax from 2007 - up from the current £110 a year - and a further £110 for using company-funded fuel privately. The equivalent charge for 40% tax-paying van drivers will be £1,200 plus a £200 fuel charge. Employers' National Insurance contributions will also soar.
HM Revenue & Customs says commuting to work is not classed as private use, and that van drivers on their way to work can stop for a paper and a bar of chocolate without incurring a tax charge!

Using Mileage Log Van Drivers can quickly log all business journeys and any 'commutable' journeys. Commutable journeys can be saved as favourites allowing the driver very quick submission of all journeys for a period, and these are clearly identified through the authorising and processing stages. Whether you need drivers to pay for private fuel costs or just need to ensure HMRC complaint records are kept Mileage Log does it. Supported Company Van driver scenarios are: Private and Business, or business only fuel benefit. Fuel payment types: Driver pays and claims, Fuel or Company cards. VAT calculations by actual fuel costs.

6.We have a mixture of driver types: company car drivers, drivers using their own cars and vans. We do not use fuel cards. Can Mileage Log help us?
Yes, this is where Mileage Log excels. All types of drivers are handled and Mileage Log calculates reimbursements to drivers. It also calculates the VAT on business Mileage and works with any of your chosen schemes. It would also work well if only a selection of your drivers have fuel cards.

7.What reimbursement schemes are supported?
Mileage Log supports:
- HMRC advisory rates or company defined rates for company cars based on engine size and fuel type
- MAPs including passenger rates for Cash Allowance/Casual drivers or your own defined MAPs.

For calculating private mileage costs where drivers only receive business mileage and fuel is purchased on a Fuel or company credit card, Mileage Log can use HMRC advisory fuel costs, the actual cost of fuel used or your own defined rates. Running all three private mileage cost schemes together provides a useful comparison tool.

8.Some of our Company car Drivers have Fuel cards and we currently use the VAT Scale charge. How will Mileage Log benefit us?
There are few situations where it is more beneficial for a company to use the VAT scale charge system. As Mile Log stores accurate business and private mileage records, all the appropriate VAT can be claimed on fuel purchased for business journeys.

The differences in VAT reclamation can be considerable and we are able to perform calculations to assist you in your decisions as whether to apply VAT scale charges or not. Please contact us for more details.
